I remember the air raids. At first we took refuge under the stairs - the strongest part of the house. Then my uncle, an ambulance driver, pointed out that all the gas meters were under the stairs, and this was not the best place to be.

I had had an uncomfortable experience already as the used nappy from our neighbour's baby had already been blown into my face by a bomb blast!!

We then had to run to the Netham Air Raid Shelter carrying pillows, blanks etc. As we were running we frequently under machine gun attack. In the shelter we had our own spot with our chairs etc. Depite the noise we were able to sleep a little. There were no tiolets and we were not allowed out - so the bucket was most useful.

We could recognise both our planes and the enemy planes by the sound of the engines. The sweetest sound was the 'All Clear'.
