During the War people had to make things last. Annie used to keep paper bags folded to be used again. She would also unravel old cardigans to save the wool and buttons to use again. They also used to make rugs out of rags and crochet mats.
Fashions changed during the war - to save on material skirts used to be made to be less flowing.
Annie used to say how you could get into very serious trouble for letting any light show through during the blackout.
Everyone had to carry their gas mask around with them where ever they went.
Bristol children were all evacuated to the countryside but this often had the effect of separating families.
Rationing meant food was short. Everything was divided into paper bags (there was no plastic). Sugar was put into strong blue paper bags. The amounts of tea, sugar etc were tiny - we wouldn't be able to manage on these amounts today.
