This story was submitted by Alan Welsh, a Radio Cumbria volunteer, on behalf of Edith (Edie) Dixon and has been added to the site with her permission.

Like most in those days, Edie left school when she was only 14 years old. Edie worked at Waddells woollen mill in Head Nook near Carlisle. It was at work that she was told by the mill manager that Britain was at war with Germany; Edie was 17 years old.

At this time, Edie lived with her family in Cumwhitton. She started work at 7.20am each day, finishing at 6pm. Her working day was a bit longer, however, as she had to walk the 2 miles to and from work. Edie鈥檚 job was on the warp wheel making woollen cloth that, during the war, was mainly used for making uniforms, etc. At this time, Edie was paid 8s 8d (47p) per week.
