During the war my Dad worked at Birkins Bakery in Derby. One day he was taken by surprise when a German plane swooped over suddenly. He was so frightened he dived in to a barrel of flour to hide himself.
Because of the blackout he used to dribehome at night in the pitch black with no lights on. We lived at Muggington near Ashbourne where lots of the houses were made out of light coloured stone. we had to throw buckets of water ove rthem to make them darker.
My parents told me about a farmer in the area who came home during the black out and turned his lights on (I think he'd been drinking) just as a german plane flew over and dropped a bomb which hit a field of cows and made a crater which is still there today.
