I am a Belgian researcher who's currently researching the crash of the Lancaster Mk I R5610 "OL-G" of R.A.F. 83 Squadron (Pathfinder Force).
On the night of 24/25 August 1942 this heavy bomber took off from R.A.F. Wyton, Hunts. on a Pathfinder mission to Frankfurt.
On the return flight, at 02.15 am, the Lancaster was shot down by a German nightfighter piloted by Oblt. Walter BARTE, Staffelkapit盲n of 4. Staffel, Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 (4./NJG 1) and Uffz. PIEPER. The bomber crashed near the village of Morkhoven, 6 km SSW of Herentals, in the Flemish province of Antwerp.
Sadly four crew members didn't survive the crash, two others were captured by the Germans, and one member, the pilot, evaded capture and safely returned to England. Those who died are buried at Morkhoven Communal Cemetery.
I have a booklett in preparation on this crash and it is also my intention to commemorate the crew next year in Morkhoven, and this in the presence of relatives of the crew members.
The crew:
F/Lt. (Pilot) Oliver R. MATHESON, DFC, managed to evade capture;
F/Lt. (Navigator) J.W. DICKER, RAAF, 402274, POW, No.641, and taken to Stalag Luft Sagan and Belaria;
F/Sgt. (Wireless Operator) W.R. CUBBERLEY, 624855, POW, No. 27030, and taken to Stalag Lamsdorf;
Sgt. (Fl. Engr.) Peter SQUIRES, 1096448, KIA, son of William Squires and of Rhoda Squires, of Low Row, Yorkshire;
F/Lt. (Observer) Robert Murray BUCHAN, DFC, 89769, KIA, age 22, son of Maj. Andrew Buchan and Jeanie M. Buchan, of Grangemouth, Stirlingshire;
Sgt. (Air Gunner) Edward Vincent NORMAN, 962166, KIA, age 27, son of George and Florence Norman, husband of Joan E. Norman, of Plumstead, London;
Sgt. (Air Gunner) Harold Denzil QUINTRELL, 553387, KIA, age 20, son of Alexander Harold and Grace Annie Quintrell, of Penryn, Cornwall.
Any kind of information/photos on the crew/bomber/squadron/base/fateful flight is most welcome !!!
I already thank you in anticipation for your appreciated co-operation.
