Rationing ... we were allowed some 2 ounces of sweets a week ... 2 ounces of butter and four ounces of margarine. Because my parents and grandparents owned shops (newsagents and grocers) we used to work on the barter system ... we would exchange coupons for different items.
This worked really well during the war ... it worked for those who didn't want sugar who could trade the coupons for something they did want, and those who used a lot of sugar could get extra coupons.
