I was 8 when the war started. One of my abiding memories of that time was standing with my Dad on the from lawn watching wave after wave of German bombers going over to bomb Coventry. Then after they had carried out the job we could see the glow of Coventry burning. Thats a memory which has stayed with me all these years.
Another memory I have is on a visit to Birmingham for a two week holiday there had only been hit and run raids till this particular night when the Garmans through everything at Birmingham especially were we were as the house backed onto railway marshalling yard. We went into the air raid shelter then stayed there all night. As a child I found if exciting but it left me with a legacy of asthma.
