The Isle of Man

When I looked out each morning
across vast emptiness
of the Irish Sea and scanned
an endless stretch of water
for the Isle of Man
and her Calf -
in visibility, fair to middlin' -
I saw a curve, unbroken.
A clear horizon.

Yet after spells of rain
and when the air is still,
the sun is settling down
into a silver mist - a haze
of vapour shimmering -
then I can see
the Isle of Man, arising
to my amazement
time and time again
