I remember the flying bombs going over Yorkshire in 1944. I was aged 10 at the time.

I was on holiday, staying with relatives, and they came to get me during the night. I pretended to be sleeping so I wouldn't have to get out of bed and go to the air-raid shelter! Eventually, I popped out of bed and went to the window where I saw a line of planes flying over. They were making a whining noise and they would fire bombs which would travel a certain distance before exlpoding as they hit something. These bombs were very unpredictable.

I wasn't frightened. As a child you don't realise the danger of a situation. We were lucky, we lived on the west coast (in the Lake District) which wasn't hit too badly.
