As we arrived at Leconfield for the first time, a hearse was just leaving. Despite this rather ominous beginning, things turned out not to be too bad. Squadron life was fairly laid back鈥ith little real hassle 鈥 except in the air.
(Dick Peacock, bomb aimer)

Many of us spent free evenings in the Beverley Arms getting quietly smashed. The three-mile walk back to Leconfield helped sober us up.
(John Goldby, bomb aimer)

The pubs we used were the King鈥檚 Head in Market Square, and the Beverley Arms 鈥 or any place where the beer was flowing as it usually ran out!
(G. Cheetham, rear gunner) 鈥
