I was only about four years old when the war started and I remember that there was a large field next to our bungalow. The Americans set up a big camp there, and they used to give us children chocolate and other things that we couldn't usually get. My mother talked about seeing the preparations for D-Day. The Solent was full of boats, and the road to Hengistbury Head was filled with tanks, and the long road called the Broadway was filled with military vehicles. Suddenly, overnight, they all disappeared.
