When I was about 3 and a half or 4, towards the later part of the year, I was walking through Barnstaple at Cross Street, by the old post office, with my mum. There were a lot of Americans stationed nearby.
I was very very blond in those days. And I always remember one of the Americans who was walking along - he patted me on the head and said "Hi! Blondie!"
I can also remember - there was lady - Mrs Mills - who used to live at Church Cottage, and she used to make cans of coco for the troops.
