This is one of my earliest memories.

I was only four at the time. We lived at 14 Dolphins Road, Folkestone. It happened, I think, during the summer.

I heard the sound of a doodlebug. Even at that age, I knew it was a sound to fear -- a dull, droning sound, followed by silence. Mum shouted to me to get into the cupboard under the stairs. It was where I kept my toys! I climbed in there with my mother, and waited.

The bomb eventually landed, a few doors down -- number 32 or 34, perhaps? Two houses were destroyed. But the force of the bomb jolted the door, and locked it.

I was frightened. It could have been us. I was hot and panicky. I didn't know how long it was before we were rescued by my Aunt Peggy from next door. (We'd been calling for her.) It could have been ten minutes, maybe half an hour. At the age of four, you just don't understand the concept of time.
