I worked for Boots The Chemists Offices on station Street Nottingham when Nottingham had its first air raid when Moot Hall and the Coop Dairy in the Meadows was raised to the ground. The next day the air raid sirens were in action and we all had to flee to the air raid shelters which were further up Station Street we all fled up and in the middle of the evacuation came a reconnaissance plane which started firing at us. We were frightened to death but thankfully no one was hurt, we would have been safer to stay where we were. Also some of us agreed to work Saturdays to help pack Insulin for people in Russia as so many ships were lost in the Barents Sea taking the Insulin to Murmansk. A lot of us volunteered to sleep at work in order to fight and incendiary bombs should they hit the building but again we were fortunate.
