Christmas Dinner's were traditionally served by the Officers. Here dinner is being served by Captain Rice. Dinner was bully beef and boiled potatoes plus a glass of whiskey as a treat from the Captain.

We could go home by ship to the UK — a 10 day trip; by road through all the countries taking 14 days; or go by Lancaster Bomber, which takes six hours. Me, I wanted to get home quick, so nine of us went by bomber. But wait — we took off from Naples airport and a half hour into the trip, the port engine caught fire! This is it, thought I. Three years of problems, and this had to happen. I said a couple of “Holy Mary’s” and back we went to Naples. Hardly had the fire been put out, that four of my buddies thought it safer to go by sea.

But me, I stuck to my first idea and got home pronto, six hours later and I was in the UK, more than pleased with life. My mother and sister’s were quite surprised to see me as I had not told them I was coming home.
