When the air raids started, we had to go down to the air raid shelter - every night.

The first air raid shelter we had was just a buried bakers van in the back garden; it was a horse-drawn van (obviously we didn鈥檛 put the horse down there too!) We buried this van but as soon as we鈥檇 got it all kitted out we managed to get a proper air raid shelter 鈥 an Anderson Shelter. So we went down there every night, we had an electric kettle down there. My Father never went down to the shelter: he stayed in the house for some unknown reason!
