My father, Sgt. David Doughty, was in the R.E.M.E. and posted to Benghazi in Libya in 1945 when, luckily hostilities were almost at an end.
Great amusement was had at the expense of any new arrivals who were nicknamed
'pinkies' for obvious reasons of lack of suntan.
Kite Hawks were a manace and the new boys would come out of the Naafi, food uncovered on plates which were immediately swooped on and best part cleared of food by these kite hawks who fully justified their army nickname 'Shite Hawks', due to their daring meal sorties!
