We were in the car, on our way to Morecambe Morecambe for a holiday! We were all very excited to be going and so we were all happily singing as we went. But when we stopped at some traffic lights a man in the next car asked how we could be singing at a time like this? We hadn't known that war had been declared. Our mood quickly changed as did everyone's, from one of holiday merriment to one of sombre reflection.
When we got to Morecombe and the B&B we were going to stay at the woman who ran it was very distressed as her son had been called up. She was too sad to have guests so we stayed for just the day instead. I had my picture taken on Morecambe Sands - on the day war broke out. And on the way home, the army would have taken our car to use to transport troops had it not been for the fact we had a disabled person in the car with us.
