I lived in Witney at the time and I still live there. I was a young married woman with a 6 months old baby. When the evacuees came we got the last two of them. Two girls called Doreen and Mary. Doreen was 8 years old and Mary was 12. They were from Guildford and their mother had died so the father could not look after them and sent them away. They were very poorly dressed, obviously they came from a poor family. But they had very good manners, they would always asked to be excused from the table when they finished their meal. They were always helpful around the house, especially Mary who was the older. She even helped with the baby. They went to school here in Witney, to St Mary鈥檚. But when Mary was 14 their father wanted her back. My husband said that he could have her back but he would also have to have Doreen. So he came and fetched them both. We did not keep in contact with them afterwards
