When was was declared on the wireless, I lived in a lighthouse in Harwich, a seaport. On the day, a man was taking photos of lighthouses and the police took him away as they thought he was a spy - but he wasn't he was making a film for a newsreel and he came to get experience of living in a light house, to take photos of three children living there, i.e. Joy and family. When the children were evacuated from the seaport, they watched the lighthouse newsreel programme at the cinema that very day.
I was 10 years old on the very day that war was declared.
Later the area was bombed and the lighthouse was used as a shelter, it was hit by a 1.5 ton mine but this did not damage the lighthouse as the walls were three feet thick.
The lighthouse is still standing. Later fire men used the lighthouse as a fire station.
