This story was told to a member of East Ayrshire Libraries by John Fredrick Whitmill on Thursday 20th May 2004.

Towards the end of the War I was stationed in Essex and was watching a mission returning. The bombers were in the middle of the formation and escorted by fighters.

As we watched one of the fighters peeled off and clipped the tail of one of the bombers. As the plane plummeted we jumped into a truck to see if there was anything we could do to help.

When we arrived on the scene there was nothing that could be done and the victim was a New Zealander called fitness.

I still wonder if the family ever found out what happened to their pilot.
