The German’s surrender in Italy — I return to Foggia. I stayed in a school opposite a small house, which was housing a peasant family with whom I struck a friendship. I can get by in Italian, one day the 8-year-old daughter is sent to find me in the school and she said: “Mama wants to see you”. I went over there immediately to find Mama in bed — with her new baby — she wanted me to be the first to see the new bambino. Italy was at war with us when we landed.
