I was six when the war started. I was annoyed that I didn鈥檛 get a Mickey Mouse gas mask like the younger children, but instead got a horrible black one. We went to our school in the morning as evacuee children had it in the afternoon. We were in a village, and my brother went potato picking and had potato fights with Italian prisoners of war who were working on the farms.
My mother had people knock on the door and ask how many rooms she had, and she HAD to take two Canadian soldiers in. We went to American parties and had ice creams in their camp. They would ask us if we had 鈥渙lder sisters鈥�. Grafton Underwood was the American Air Base. Children had more freedom then. We visited Whitstable relations although we weren鈥檛 supposed to do so. My parents were in uniform (Fire service), but we children had to hide behind milk churns on the platform.
