One day whilst playing on the beach with 9 other kids, it was littered with burnt out flares, great lumps of tallow wax, planks from ships, and things washed up from the sea.

I came across a solid tin - I tried to get into it by hammering it with heavy stone. I managed to get a small hole in the tin and took it to my Grandfather to look at it. He noticed German writing and took it to the police and internees who said "get it out of here quick!"

It was a pencil type bomb and the pin to activate it was on the other side of the tin, to where I have been banging. I could have blown myself and the whole street up.

My Mum was sitting with one of the internees and told her about this incident. She said (in German) "he will live to know something worse". At first my mother though this was a very unsympathetic thing to say, but grew to learn, she was right.
