Marian Johnson's story as told to CHARLES DINSDALE

Marian was born in 1936.

I was a small child during the war years and meat was rationed throughout my childhood. My Father bred pigs and usually kept one or two at a time at our house. My Father knew a Co-op butcher who would visit our house discreetly with his air rifle. The deed was done at night! The first thing we knew was when we got up in the morning if we opened the door to the walk-in pantry the pig was hung up all in joints. We were told not to say anything to anybody as Dad would be in trouble.

It was my job to push my doll's pram full of joints covered by blankets and go with my Dad to deliver the meat. We even delivered to a policeman's house.

As a child this was very exciting and when my Dad got paid, I always got something as well.
