(Story told by Mrs June Cornwell, niece.)
My uncle, Albert Lett left for Singapore from Aldershot in early 1942. He was captured by the Japanese when they invaded in Feb 1942. He survived captivity in Singapore, but near the end of the war the prisoners were taken by boat to Japan. Enroute, the ship was torpedoed by the americans. Some of the men were rescued by the americans, but my uncle was lost. It still upsets me today to think that he survived imprisonment for so long only to be killed by an american torpedo.
