I worked at Radway Green munitions factory for 3 years around 1941. I travelled each day from Longport by train with a group of 5 girls. I always cut along the canal bank to get to the station quickly as I set off at 5am!During one really bad snow storm we all got stranded at Radway Green.
I worked in the loading area,we filled the bullets with cordite.The outer shell was coated with beeswax,the detonator was then put in the case and filled with cordite or gunpowder.The bullet was then put in the case and put in the necking machine which closed the case.
It was piece work and paid by the weight of the boxes you produced. My average pay packet was about 拢4.We worked shifts,days,noons and nights. I hated the noon shift-we never seemed to see daylight on those days.
