“We’re all old here, we all know about the war. You don’t know about it — you’re too youngâ€
January 1942
I was conscripted to come and work in a factory — previously was given 6 weeks engineering training in Guildford Grammar School.
Working in Woking at Inkerman Barracks — as a nurse for the officer’s children. They were too old for me to keep me out being conscripted.
Most girls were sent to Coventry but I ended up with Scottish girls in Brum (majority were from Glasgow). Came to work in Baxters, screwmakers, Sheepcote Street then from there to Weyman Street to a proper engineering factory that made machine tools.
I threatened to go home from Baxters because I was bored so they move me.
I met my husband in this second company. He was working in the tool room and so was I.
We got married on Whit Saturday — early morning in Summer Hill Methodist Chapel in 1943 — we had the weekend for our honeymoon at home.
