It was Christmas 1944 and we was guarding the banks of the River Maas in Holland. We was sheltering in bombed out houses.
We had hard biscuits and bully beef. But in the gardens of this house there was chickens which the sergeant killed. In the garden there was sprouts and potatoes, so the sergeant cooked us a roast dinner! In the basement of the house there was a big cooker. (All the inhabitants had gone.)
We felt very good!
When we withdrew we went to a town, Helmod. We had another Christmas dinner there! It was a hotel place and they gave us a free regiment dinner!
We felt really, really good!
