August 1940 was my 14th birthday so it was time for me to leave school and go back home to Birmingham. All the time that I was evacuated it had been, what was called a phoney war, nothing had really happened at all as far as we were concerned. All I can remember of the news programs on the Radio, was the R.A.F. dropping leaflets on Germany, which was a bit stupid considering all the facts. I can also remember listening to Tommy Handley in a program called "ITMA" (It's that man again) this was an extremely popular program which practically everyone listened to, and looked forward to (something like Coronation St. is today).

This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Anastasia Travers a volunteer with WM CSV Actiondesk on behalf of John Harding and has been added to the site with his permission. John Harding fully understands the sites terms and conditions.
