I got married in December 1942. My husband Ron was in the forces and stationed in Scotland. He went back there after the wedding. In February he was given embarkation leave but wasn't able to get home. I got special permission from Wedgwood's, where I worked, to have time off and my mother-in-law paid for my ticket to travel to Scotland. I got the midnight express from Crewe to Scotland (Ecklefecken).
That train was full of soldiers of every nationality you could think of - I was a bit worried at first but everyone was wonderful I really didn't feel in any danger. In fact, a Norwegian soldier put his kit bag on the floor for me and I sat on it all the way to Scotland!
