I was eleven years old when war broke out, living in Manchester.

I remember we had a Morrison shelter in our kitchen, which occupied the whole room and I hated it! My brothers were in the air force and my mother (she was a widow) and myself used to sleep there every night during the blitz in Manchester.

I remember feeling very frightened as bombs dropped all around us and in the morning seeing the devastation.

Shortly after this I was evacuated to Wilmslow about 8 miles away, with my school. I went to some very elderly people who were quite strict. Eventually I travelled by bus from home.
