On this particular day the sirens had sounded signifying an on oncoming raid. My Mother had a strict policy of everyone utilising the Anderson shelter at all times of potential danger. This was not open to debate and even included our family pet, a scotch terrier. On this occasion, however, the animal, despite our repeated pleadings, refused to come with us. Because of this my Mother told myself and my two sisters to return back to the house, along with the dog. Once here we took refuge under tables and hid in cupboards.
The bombs continued to fall through the night.
Next morning we surveyed the damage the bombs had caused and found to our horror that the air raid shelter was severely damaged, along with the outside of our house.
We never forget that dog!
