During the war - travelling was very restricted but Dunoon had a boom defence to prevent submarines and it stretched from "the Gantocks" to the Cloch lighthouse. The defence was metal nets held up by buoys some of which resembled floating mines. As we were on holiday, my father decided to take my mother, her brother and me on a rowing boat on the Clyde. My mother was convinced that one of the buoys was a sea mine and every time my father rowed towards it she screamed out in fear. My father realising it wasn't a mine rowed towards it intentionally.
