The North strand was bombed and we were very scared. I remember we were rationed terribly in Dublin. Tea and sugar were very expensive it was 2 shilling and 6pence for a cup of tea. My mum bought it on the black market.

When she couldn't get it she had to drink shell cockel instead of tea when we couldn't get tea. It was horrible. Men used to break it up and smoke it when they didn't have tobacco.
