I was in the WAAF during the war and I remember one Christmas I had arranged to join my family in Manchester. My friend and I were travelling together and as all travelling for troops had been cancelled over Christmas we decided to wear our civvies to travel in. We went to the local station, Oakington near Cambridge, and firstly my friend asked for a ticket to Manchester. The stern looking lady booking clerk asked "are you from the local RAF camp?" My friend had previously obtained her sister's civilian identity card and she did not answer, but just showed the card. She duly received her railway ticket.
In the meantime I was desperately wondering what I was going to do when I felt this card being thrust into my hand. The stern looking clerk went through the same procedure with me and I repeated my friend's actions and finally we both went off to meet our respective families in Manchester and had a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas.
