Mark Read's grovery shop was at Saxilby. Everyone was allowed two ounces of butter, sugar, margarine and lard. He used to weigh it exactly and wrap it in greaseproof paper. That amount had to last a week. Our mothers had to manage things very carefully.

It didn't matter if one family had more money that the next. You could only get food for the number of coupons you had. We also had to use powdered milk and egg.

Our porridge was made from oatmeal. I remember it being very runny and to make it taste better we would put jam or teacle on it from our rations.
