My friend and I joined the Red Cross which was held in a hall at Page Park, Staple Hill. We did a course in first aid and home nursing. If we were able to help at Frenchay Hospital during our spare time, we would go there and help to read and write letters for the American troops who were injured during the war. I remember the brick built ward with pillars down the centres. The G.I鈥檚 used to go in and out the pillars in their wheel chairs. I remember one saying "hello Angel face what was heaven like when you left?" Another one that was able to walk and wanted to try and dance said "let鈥檚 take the leather off of your shoes." The wards are still being used to this day.
