Food rationing

At the end of the war I was 4 but I clearly remember a by-product of food rationing. My parents kept chickens, ducks, geese and two pigs. Thus we had plenty of eggs, chicken, goose and duck meat. At that age I did not understand the fate that lay in store for the 2 pigs which, perhaps unwisely, had been given the same names as myself and my younger brother. I used to enjoy taking the pigs into the orchard to eat the fallen apples and we became good friends.
When I found out that the pigs were to become pork and bacon I was appalled and protested loudly! Unfortunately I was unable to save them, as pork and bacon were in short supply. However I stoutly refused to eat my friends.
