During the food shortages in the Second World War, my Father decided to buy some hens, hoping the eggs they would lay would augment our small rations. A hen house was duly purchased together with a small number of hens. They duly provided hoped-for additions to our menu. All went well until one of the hens seemed to have a cold, coughing and sneezing and causing consternation. My father decided that the hen should be dosed with "Fennings Fever Cure" (a favourite cure-all of the day). Amazingly, after a few doses, the hen recovered and continued to lay eggs almost daily.
