Me and my husband Bill on our wedding day, 7 October 1939
War was declared on 3 September 1939 and I was married on 7 October 1939. I was one of the lucky wartime brides who had the full wedding outfit, as my wedding had been planned for six months before war was declared.
My dress was made out of seven yards of white brocade with waterfall pleats and a fishtail train. There were 36 tiny heart-shaped buttons from the neck and on the sleeves. I had a large bouquet of white lillies, and also held an enormous horseshoe and key.
Bill wore striped trousers and a black jacket, and carried chamois leather gloves because he was working near Yeovil in Somerset, famous for its sheepskin goods.
My veil was held with a pearl tiara. During the war my wedding dress was made into a christening gown for my first baby.
