The Germans began bombing us even more and then there were submarines 鈥楿 boats鈥� started to attack our shipping especially those ships bringing us food from America.

In the meantime we as children had to adapt ourselves to wartime conditions and sometimes as children we had some fun. We used to collect scrap metal for melting down to make into ships, tanks and airplanes. At school we used to have special weeks for this purpose and we used to have special weeks for raising money for this.

Our Father鈥檚 had to work many hours 鈥� my Daddy was builder and had to build air raid shelters and repair houses and other buildings which had been bombed. Grandma鈥檚 Daddy was a butcher and had to provide people with meat, pork pies, sausages (pork pies and sausages were not rationed).

IN the evenings my Daddy had to go to the 91热爆 Guard (like the army) 鈥� he didn鈥檛 like this! Grandma鈥檚 Daddy was an Air Raid Warden and he had to see no lights were showing from people鈥檚 houses and patrol the streets during air raids and help if anyone was injured.

I should say that our Air Force became stronger and during the late summer we had the 鈥淏attle of Britain鈥� when everyday the Germans would send their bombers over and our fighters would shoot them down and so we won the Battle of Britain.
