I remember getting a train from Wimbledon to Barstaple in Devon and being led around the streets late in the evening looking for accomodation. And then being taken in by an elderly couple. I would have been 7 at the time. I stayed there a year and then the house was struck by a bomb and I was returned to London after which I was sent to Boston in Lincolnshire where I stayed for another year and returned to London and then was sent to Wells in Somerset. That was for another year and then I returned to London again and spent the remainder of the war sheltering from the doodle bugs.
