I was born at the beginning of the war. We lived in Pitsmoor, Sheffield. In 43-45, our shelter would be the interconnected cellars of four houses. It was all reinforced. Steel bars were put up inside the cellar as a frame. Each cellor contained four bunks. We had to have food and water in there, as you never knew how long you would be down there for. One cellar was for the toilet.

My Dad was an A.R.P warden. He went fire watching. It was a two man operation. Someone had to keep filling the bucket of water.
