I remember your brother [talking to Muriel] used to have a loft of pigeons, and neck them to make pigeon pies — the first horror was seeing them hopping round the field with no head on! He said “It’s alright, it’s only their nerves.” Then the next day I went up and they were hanging upside down by their legs and your Mum said “well, we’ve got to bleed them before we can use the meat” - that was one of the first horrors I witnessed in the countryside!
