When war broke out I joined the Womens Land Army and worked on a farm at Ringmer near the Green Man pub where we had some wonderful evenings. I was about 20 at the time.

I used to have to go to Newhaven Fort to collect the pig swill from the soldiers. We travelled in a Rolls Royce with the back taken out.

One day the soldier at the gate told us to stop but the driver thought he was joking and kept on driving. The next thing a rifle was shoved through the window of the car. I have never been so scared in my life.

Eventually they got to know us and the driver would hoot the horn to herald our arrival.

My greatest fear during the war was the rats that were around.
