My father had one lorry but two horse and carts, and one of our jobs was to ride these horses from the coal yard back into the fields just outside the village where they were allowed to have a marvellous weekend. Otherwise they were kept in stables in the village. So David and I used to take great joy on Saturdays to ride them - just showed how quiet the roads were then. Of course when the invasion started in 1944, particularly when the Americans moved away from here, the roads were crowded and when I stop to think the main A350 road, which is now a bypass for Lacock, used to come right through the village, that was a very busy time for the roads, with convoys going to the south coast.
