The following is a letter sent to my Uncle Owen from his father Patrick, who was my grandfather.It was in reply to the first letter he had received from Owen who was serving in the Army in the Middle East and was assumed captured by the Italians and did not know his fate.
Private Owen White
16th British General Hospital,
Middle East.7/7/1943
My Dear Son,
I have just received your air letter and I would just like to say how thankful we are you are now out of Italian hands and we are longing for you to come home.I have known you had been repatriated because your cousin's wife came to see me,to tell me Jack had been to see you.I may tell you that Anne (sister) has a daughter also called Ann, born 11th May and they are both fine and would also add that Francis(brother) and Dolly and their babies are well and Mena(sister) is overjoyed at your coming home.The neighbours also send their best wishes,so get strong and it won't be too long before you are home, so God Bless and protect you.

Post Script-When Owen came home he was a broken man and could not settle and was discharged from the Army on health grounds.He persued a nomadic life which he put down to his time in captivity.
