I was stationed in France, Belgium and Holland at various times throughout the war. I was a Sergeant Armourer in the RAF, this meant that I loaded ammunition, bombs and guns onto the planes before they set off on a mission.I also had to ensure that everything was safe on their return. We were often attacked by overhead enemy planes trying to wipe out the ammunition depot. During these times we were expected to guard our ammo, while the anti-aircraft guns tried to shoot down the attackers. It sometimes got quite scary.
I married my late wife Dorothy during the war.She was in the WRAF. I used to write letters home as often as I could, to my girlfriend/wife and to my mother who had been a widow for many years and lived alone at home in Kendal Street, Byker.
