This story was submitted to the People's War site by Maggie Smith from WM CSV Action Desk on behalf of Joan McManus and has been added to the site with her permission. Joan McManus fully understands the sites terms and conditions.

Sirens sounded on the 1st night the war was declared and all neighbours decamped to nearby fields and ditches as we didn鈥檛 know what to expect.
One unfortunate man was so panic stricken that he appeared minus trousers and boots, having left his wife to bring their two children from the house.
He never lived it down!
It was quite some time after that but later on we spent most nights in the Anderson shelter, though most of the activity was anti-aircraft fire.
